I have been going nuts for the past 4 hours trying to fix this problem.

I have searched the posts and found a topic on this but didn't undertand what to do!

The player is only seen through the ethernet cable connection. Not USB or serial.
Once the player is found, I try to open it and it says "could not connect socket"

I bought a USB to serial connector to try to update the players firmware, can't get that to work ether!

I have never had problems but haven't updated the music on the player in a year or so...

The player works fine otherwise.

Thanks everyone!

Are you using the correct serial cable? You need to use a null-modem cable when you connect to the player.

Are you using the correct USB driver?

USB to Serial adapters are normally not working for updating the firmware. Some are working, but it seems most are not.

If Emplode worked via ethernet before, but doesn't work now, there is a chance that the Windows Firewall is getting in the way. See if this fixes it.

Other possible problems include a mismatch between the player firmware version and the Emplode version. As you have surmised, you need to solve that serial port issue if you want to upgrade the player firmware. However, you don't need to do that simply to find out if the two versions match. Just hit the "About" screen on both the player and on the PC's Emplode software. If they both say 2.something, then that's not the problem. In fact, if your player is running 2.00 beta 13, it's already running a good version and you don't need to do anything else.

Well...I just updated the firmware with a null-modem and gender bender for my USB to serial cable (two trips to radio shack) and now when trying to open the player it displays error code 0xc0041002 "download failed when checking database". I think I am using a regular ethernet cable, the one that used to work! Do I need to get a different cable?...

Im about to thow this off a building!

Do not use Emplode version 2.10. Do not use Empeg firmware version 3 alpha. The new error you are getting is because you switched to the alpha versions... Don't do that.

Put them both back to the known-good version 2 stuff you had before; that should have been fine. Player firmware: Either version 2.00 final or Version 2 beta 13 from here. Emplode: Version 2.00 final. Use only those.
